The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has appointed Professor Anugbum Onuoha as the new Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Akwa Ibom State, following a recent redeployment of senior officials within the commission.
Onuoha, a Professor of Law, replaces his predecessor as part of INEC’s routine administrative changes aimed at strengthening electoral operations across the country. His deployment comes at a time when political activities are expected to gradually intensify ahead of the next general elections.
With prior experience serving in similar roles in other states, Onuoha is expected to oversee key responsibilities including voter registration, coordination of electoral logistics, and engagement with political stakeholders to ensure smooth conduct of elections.
In his first remarks after assuming office, he pledged to uphold transparency, neutrality, and professionalism in the discharge of his duties. He also stressed the importance of collaboration with security agencies, political parties, and civil society organisations to sustain confidence in the electoral process.
INEC has in recent months continued to reposition its leadership across various states, a move observers say is designed to enhance efficiency and credibility in Nigeria’s electoral system.
