President Bola Tinubu has paid a glowing tribute to elder statesman and Afenifere leader, Reuben Fasoranti, as he prepares to celebrate his 100th birthday on May 11.
In a statement released on Sunday, Tinubu described Fasoranti’s journey through life as one marked by sacrifice, integrity and outstanding service to Nigeria, saying the nonagenarian has earned every honour and praise coming his way.
The President applauded the Yoruba leader for his lasting impact on education, politics and the struggle to restore democratic rule in the country.
According to him, Fasoranti has consistently stood out for his principles, courage and unwavering dedication to causes he believed in.
Tinubu said the Afenifere chieftain’s life reflects honesty, selfless service and exemplary leadership, noting that his influence stretched far beyond public office through activism and political engagement.
He recalled that Fasoranti was a loyal follower of late sage, Obafemi Awolowo, and among the few surviving disciples of the Awolowo political ideology. The President noted that Fasoranti was part of the defunct Action Group during the First Republic and later joined the Unity Party of Nigeria in the Second Republic.
Tinubu also highlighted Fasoranti’s role in the administration of late Adekunle Ajasin, where he served as Commissioner for Finance in old Ondo State between 1979 and 1983.
The President further praised him for standing firmly against military rule, describing him as one of the prominent voices that demanded a return to democratic governance during the era of dictatorship.
According to Tinubu, Fasoranti later emerged as a major force within Afenifere, championing Yoruba unity, progress and solidarity. He added that after the death of Abraham Adesanya and the crisis that rocked the group, Fasoranti became the widely acknowledged leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation.
Tinubu also recounted how the elder statesman survived an assassination attempt during the regime of late military ruler, Sani Abacha, saying the experience only strengthened his resolve against oppression and authoritarianism.
The President reflected on the personal losses Fasoranti endured over the years, including the death of his wife in 1991 and the killing of his daughter, Funke Olakunrin, who was murdered by kidnappers in 2019.
Tinubu also thanked the elder statesman for backing his presidential ambition and for offering prayers that eventually preceded his victory in the 2023 election.
