The Lagos State Government will shut the outbound lane of Eko Bridge heading to Lagos Island from Tuesday, May 12, for urgent safety investigations and repairs.
Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the closure affects the section between Apongbon and Ijora Olopa, while the inward lane into Lagos Island remains open.
The move follows an emergency order by the Federal Ministry of Works after five supporting piles on the bridge were found to be broken and unstable.
Diversion Routes for Motorists
To ease traffic, LASG and LASTMA are advising drivers to use these alternatives:
- From Apongbon & Ijora Olopa: Use the Third Mainland Bridge to access your destination.
- From Ijora Olopa: Connect via Ijora Causeway → Funsho Williams Avenue → Ikorodu Road.
- General advice: Motorists are urged to plan ahead and expect delays during peak hours.
Osiyemi assured that traffic and security personnel will be deployed along diversion points to manage flow and maintain order.
Why the Closure?
The Federal Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, said the section must be closed immediately to prevent collapse and allow for piling, pier cap repairs, and replacement of damaged piles.
Contractors and divers will investigate the full extent of damage before final repairs, with an initial 10-day timeline set for the investigation phase.
LASG says the closure is indefinite until safety checks and repairs are completed.
Commuters heading to Lagos Island should expect heavier traffic on Third Mainland Bridge and Carter Bridge corridors.
LASTMA has not posted updated diversion maps yet, but officials say real-time updates will be shared through their social channels once traffic management is fully deployed.
