Nollywood Mourns as Veteran Actor, Kola Oyewo Dies at 80

A wave of grief has swept through Nigeria’s entertainment and academic communities following the death of legendary actor and respected scholar, Prof. Adekola Oyewo, widely known as Kola Oyewo.

The iconic performer passed away on Friday, June 12, 2026, at the age of 80, bringing to a close a remarkable career that left an enduring mark on Nollywood, theatre, and higher education.

The heartbreaking news was announced by his son, Adetoyese Oyewo, in an emotional Facebook post.

“It is with a heavy heart that I share the passing of my beloved father,” Adetoyese wrote, describing the late actor as a man whose life was defined by “love, wisdom, strength, and kindness.”

While acknowledging the family’s deep sorrow, he also expressed gratitude for the meaningful and impactful life his father lived.

He said that although Prof. Oyewo’s earthly journey has come to an end, his legacy will continue to live on through his family, friends, academic colleagues, and the countless admirers whose lives he influenced over several decades.

The family appealed for prayers and support as they mourn their patriarch, choosing instead to celebrate a life devoted to public service, scholarship, and the advancement of the performing arts.

Beyond his celebrated career in Nollywood, Prof. Oyewo distinguished himself in academia, rising to the rank of professor and mentoring generations of dramatic arts students at institutions including Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, and later Redeemer’s University.

He earned widespread respect for transforming classrooms into practical theatres, helping shape many of the accomplished talents in Nigeria’s film and media industry today.

The family and university authorities are expected to announce details of his funeral and memorial services in the coming days.
