Weather projections highlighted by British media suggest a strong high-pressure system may settle over large parts of England, bringing several days of hot, dry and settled conditions and raising fears of one of the hottest spells of the summer so far.
Forecasters, however, have urged caution, stressing that predictions involving extreme temperatures many days in advance carry a degree of uncertainty and could still shift as weather patterns evolve.
Should temperatures climb to 40°C, the figures would place the heatwave among the most severe ever experienced in the U.K.
The country’s highest temperature on record remains 40.3°C, which was registered in July 2022 during a historic heatwave that triggered widespread travel disruption, sparked wildfires and piled pressure on health services across the country.
Health officials typically advise the public to take extra care during periods of extreme heat by drinking plenty of water, limiting time spent in direct sunlight during the hottest parts of the day, checking on elderly or vulnerable relatives and neighbours, and paying close attention to official weather warnings.
A prolonged spell of hot weather is also expected to drive large crowds to beaches, parks and other outdoor destinations, while transport operators and utility companies may begin preparations for possible heat-related disruptions.
The U.K.’s national weather agency, the Met Office, is expected to keep a close watch on the developing conditions and issue updated forecasts and any heat alerts as confidence in the outlook grows.
