The Ogun State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the alleged sexual assault of a Nigerian TikToker identified as Mirabel, known on the platform as @mirab351, following widespread public concern and outrage on social media.
The case gained national attention after a video shared by the survivor went viral, triggering intense conversations about safety, justice and the protection of sexual violence survivors in Nigeria.
Police Confirm Immediate Action
The Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed that the Commissioner of Police directed the Divisional Police Officer of the Ibafo Division to urgently reach out to the victim once the case came to the Command’s attention.
According to Babaseyi, the victim subsequently reported to the Ibafo Police Station, where officers obtained initial details of the alleged incident.
Preliminary findings suggested that the alleged assault occurred within the Ogijo jurisdiction. Following this, the survivor was immediately taken to a medical facility for assessment and urgent treatment.
After receiving preliminary care, she was transferred to the Ogijo Police Station, which has jurisdiction over the area where the incident reportedly took place, for proper documentation and continuation of the investigation.
Survivor Referred for Further Medical Care
Police authorities stated that due to the survivor’s fragile medical and emotional state, she has been referred for extended medical attention to support her recovery while investigations continue.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the victim’s safety and well-being, assuring the public that efforts are ongoing to identify and hold accountable anyone found responsible.
DSVA Responds, Clarifies Jurisdiction
The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) also issued an update, revealing that it contacted a close associate of the survivor who confirmed that she had been discharged from the hospital.
The agency explained that it was able to respond swiftly after concerned members of the public tagged and alerted officials online. However, DSVA clarified that the alleged incident occurred in Ogun State and therefore falls outside its jurisdiction.
It added that all relevant information gathered had been forwarded to the appropriate authorities in Ogun State for necessary action, while emphasising the importance of maintaining the survivor’s protection and confidentiality.
Incident Date and Allegations
According to the viral video shared by the survivor, the incident allegedly occurred on February 15. In the video, she claimed that an unidentified man broke into her apartment, restrained her and threatened that his family’s influence could prevent justice from being served.
The allegations have since sparked nationwide calls for a transparent investigation, with many Nigerians urging authorities to ensure that the case is handled without intimidation, interference or abuse of influence.
Police Urge Cooperation, Stress Legal Consequences
Authorities in Ogun State have urged the survivor to cooperate fully with investigators to ensure due process. They also reiterated that sexual violence remains a serious criminal offence under Nigerian law and is punishable upon conviction.
As the investigation progresses, the case continues to draw attention, highlighting broader concerns about survivor protection, accountability and the enforcement of laws against sexual violence in Nigeria.
