A deadly crash in Niger State has claimed 10 lives, with authorities pointing to speeding and unsafe transport practices as the cause of the tragedy. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says the incident is another stark warning about the dangers on the nation’s highways.
The accident happened early Monday morning, around 8:20 a.m., along the Tafa–Gujeni road near Malam Tanko, involving a DAF tanker carrying 33 male passengers.
According to FRSC spokesperson Felicia Kalu, initial findings revealed that 10 people lost their lives, while 20 others suffered injuries of varying severity. Three passengers were rescued without any injuries.
The Corps strongly criticised the practice of transporting people alongside goods, describing it as both illegal and highly risky.
Investigations indicate that the driver was speeding, which led to a loss of control and ultimately the crash. Officials also confirmed that the vehicle was involved in mixed loading – a violation of road safety regulations.
FRSC personnel quickly arrived at the scene, rescuing victims and clearing the wreckage to ease traffic.
Those injured were taken to Umar Musa General Hospital in Sabon Wuse for treatment, while the deceased were moved to the hospital morgue.
Reacting to the incident, Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed described the crash as avoidable, stressing that it highlights the consequences of ignoring safety rules.
He warned that no trip is worth risking lives and condemned the continued disregard for road safety guidelines by some drivers.
The FRSC says it will step up enforcement and awareness campaigns to tackle speeding and put an end to mixed loading across the country.
The agency also urged drivers and transport operators to obey traffic laws and use appropriate vehicles, reminding Nigerians that keeping the roads safe is everyone’s responsibility.
Condolences were extended to the families of the victims, while those injured were wished a quick recovery.
