Veteran journalist and publisher of Ovation Media Group, Dele Momodu, has expressed deep concern over Nigeria’s worsening economic situation, saying the hardship has become so severe that he now hesitates to open messages on his phone because of the number of people asking for financial assistance.
Speaking during an interview with journalist Rufai Oseni on Nevon Media, Momodu described the current economic hardship as the worst he has witnessed in his lifetime, despite having lived through several challenging periods in Nigeria’s history.
According to him, the rising levels of poverty and financial distress have left many Nigerians struggling to meet their daily needs.
“The economy is so bad that these days I get too scared to even open some messages on my phone because everyone is begging,” Momodu said.
The media entrepreneur also criticised the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, arguing that the government has failed to show enough empathy toward Nigerians facing rising living costs and worsening insecurity. He said the current level of hardship and insecurity is unprecedented in the country’s history.
Momodu further stressed the importance of regular communication between leaders and citizens, saying a president should consistently keep the public informed about government policies and efforts to address national challenges.
His comments have since sparked conversations across social media, with many Nigerians agreeing that the rising cost of living, inflation, and economic difficulties have increased the number of people seeking financial assistance from friends, relatives, and public figures, while others maintain that the government needs more time for its economic reforms to produce results.
