Legal trouble appears to be closing in on former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai, as the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) prepares to take him to court over a series of corruption-related allegations.
In a statement released on Monday by its spokesperson, John Okor Odey, the commission said El-Rufai, alongside one Joel Adoga, is expected to appear before the Federal High Court in Kaduna on Tuesday, March 24, 2026.
According to the ICPC, the charges filed under case number FHC/KD/73/2026 border on alleged misappropriation of public assets, unlawful possession of government property, and money laundering.
The agency also revealed that a separate case has been instituted against El-Rufai and another individual, Amadu Sule, at a Kaduna State High Court. This second suit includes allegations such as abuse of office, fraud, and actions aimed at conferring undue advantage.
Both cases were filed on March 18, 2026, with the date for the state high court proceedings yet to be announced.
The ICPC confirmed that the former governor has been officially served, reiterating its commitment to following due legal process.
This development signals a new phase in the mounting scrutiny surrounding El-Rufai, whose time in office has recently come under renewed public debate.
While supporters continue to defend his record as governor, critics and civil society groups have called for greater accountability over financial decisions made during his tenure.
The case is expected to attract nationwide attention, given El-Rufai’s prominence in Nigeria’s political space and the broader implications for transparency and governance.
