ABUJA, NIGERIA – The Federal Government has approved new international routes for Nigerian carrier United Nigeria Airlines, paving the way for the airline to operate flights to major destinations, including New York, Canada, and Dubai.
The approval is part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen Nigeria’s aviation sector, increase the participation of indigenous airlines in international travel, and reduce the dominance of foreign carriers on key routes.
According to aviation authorities, the move is expected to boost the share of international passenger traffic carried by Nigerian airlines, create jobs, generate foreign exchange earnings, and improve connectivity between Nigeria and major global destinations.
The newly approved routes will allow United Nigeria Airlines to expand beyond its current domestic and regional operations, offering Nigerian travelers more options for direct international flights. Industry stakeholders believe the development could help retain a larger portion of air travel revenue within the country.
The government has repeatedly emphasized the need to support local airlines through favourable policies, route allocations, and improved aviation infrastructure as part of efforts to build globally competitive Nigerian carriers.
United Nigeria Airlines is expected to commence preparations for the new routes, including fleet expansion, regulatory compliance, and operational planning, before launching the services.
