FG to Deploy Digital Addresses Nationwide to Combat Fraud, Insecurity

The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved the rollout of a nationwide digital postcode and addressing system aimed at tackling fraud, improving security, enhancing emergency response, and supporting the country’s growing digital economy.

The approval was granted by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as part of broader efforts to modernise Nigeria’s addressing infrastructure and strengthen service delivery across the country.

According to the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, the new system will introduce a Geographic Information System (GIS)-enabled alphanumeric digital postcode framework capable of providing more accurate location identification nationwide. The project is being implemented in collaboration with the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST).

How the Digital Address System Will Work

Unlike traditional addresses that often rely on landmarks, street descriptions, or conventional postal codes, the new system will assign unique alphanumeric codes linked directly to geographic coordinates. This will make it easier to identify homes, businesses, and public facilities with greater precision, regardless of whether they are located in urban centres or remote communities.

Officials say the system will significantly reduce the challenges associated with locating addresses, a long-standing issue that has affected logistics operations, government services, and emergency response efforts across Nigeria.

Fighting Fraud and Insecurity

One of the major goals of the initiative is to strengthen national security by creating a more reliable and traceable addressing system. Security agencies will be better equipped to identify locations, respond to incidents, and investigate criminal activities more efficiently.

The government believes that a comprehensive digital address database will help reduce fraud, improve identity verification processes, and make it more difficult for criminal networks to exploit gaps in Nigeria’s existing address system.

Boost for E-Commerce and Logistics

Industry experts have long identified poor address infrastructure as one of the biggest obstacles to e-commerce growth in Nigeria. Delivery companies frequently encounter difficulties locating customers, resulting in delays, failed deliveries, and increased operational costs.

The new digital postcode system is expected to improve parcel delivery accuracy, reduce logistics costs, and enhance customer experience for online shopping platforms and courier services.

Improved Emergency Response

Government officials say emergency services, including police, fire services, and medical responders, will benefit significantly from the new addressing framework.

By providing precise location information, the system could help emergency teams reach incident locations faster, potentially saving lives during medical emergencies, accidents, natural disasters, and security incidents.

Supporting National Planning

Beyond security and logistics, the digital address initiative is expected to improve urban planning, infrastructure development, population management, financial inclusion, and the delivery of government services.

Authorities believe the project will provide critical data needed for planning roads, healthcare facilities, schools, and other public infrastructure while also helping businesses make more informed investment decisions.

The Federal Government described the project as a key component of Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda and a foundational infrastructure that will help connect citizens, businesses, and government institutions more effectively.

With FEC approval now secured, the nationwide implementation process is expected to commence in phases, although government officials have yet to announce a specific rollout timeline.
