INEC Announces Final Phase of Voter Registration Starting May 11
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that the third and final phase of the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise will commence on Monday, May 11, 2026. The exercise is scheduled to run until July 10, 2026, offering eligible Nigerians a crucial opportunity to register ahead of upcoming elections.
In an official statement released on May 5, 2026, INEC disclosed that the second phase of the CVR exercise was suspended on April 17 to allow for a comprehensive cleanup of the voter register. This process followed the publication of the register for claims and objections, which is a standard procedure aimed at improving data accuracy and eliminating irregularities.
According to the commission, this final phase is particularly important for citizens who have recently turned 18, as well as those who were unable to register during the earlier phases of the exercise. INEC emphasized that participation in voter registration is a fundamental civic responsibility and a key step toward strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process.
The electoral body also encouraged already registered voters who wish to make changes to their records to take advantage of this period. This includes individuals seeking to transfer their registration to a new location, replace lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), or correct errors in their personal information. To make the process more accessible, INEC has provided both physical and digital options for registration and updates.
Eligible Nigerians can visit INEC offices at the state and local government levels nationwide, or use the commission’s official online portal for pre-registration and other services.
INEC further announced that the updated Register of Voters will be displayed for public scrutiny from July 23 to July 29, 2026. This display period allows citizens to review the voter list, raise objections, and report any discrepancies. The commission described this stage as a vital legal requirement designed to ensure the credibility, transparency, and completeness of the voter register.
Reassuring the public, INEC stated that all necessary preparations have been completed to guarantee a smooth and efficient registration process across the country. The commission urged Nigerians not to wait until the last minute, but instead to take early advantage of the registration window.
