President Bola Tinubu has applauded the ongoing All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries across the country, describing the exercise as proof that the ruling Party’s internal democratic process is alive and functioning effectively.
Speaking with journalists during the primary elections on Saturday, the President said the conduct of the exercise in several states had been peaceful, organised and largely in line with laid-down Party procedures and democratic principles.
Tinubu said the primaries had given Party members from the grassroots to the national level the opportunity to take part in deciding the future leadership and direction of the APC.
“This is a demonstration of internal democracy and it has been going very well according to plan,” the President said.
“This is politics, grassroots politics, where every member of the Party has a right to participate and be involved. It is to ensure that we have internal democracy, and it is peaceful and well-organised.”
The President also commended governors and Party leaders across the federation for supervising what he described as a transparent and credible exercise.
Responding to questions on his assessment of the nationwide primaries, Tinubu said he was impressed with the process and the level of coordination displayed across the states.
“Today, I am very satisfied, very, very satisfied that these governors have done well in their various states,” he stated.
“In fact, from the ward congresses to local government congresses, delegate accreditation, validation, membership register and certification of the electoral process, it has all gone very well.
“At least, you will score democracy at a high level.”
Tinubu further said the enthusiasm and participation of Party members across the country had encouraged the leadership of the APC to continue strengthening internal unity and democratic values ahead of future elections.
“I’m just excited. They challenge me more,” he added.
The APC is currently conducting primaries in different states to choose candidates for upcoming elective positions, with Party leaders repeatedly emphasising transparency, inclusiveness and unity throughout the process.
