After a nerve-shredding battle that stretched into extra time, the DR Congo national football team finally punched their ticket to the expanded FIFA World Cup with a dramatic 1–0 victory over the Jamaica national football team in Guadalajara, Mexico.
The decisive moment came deep into extra time when defender Axel Tuanzebe pounced on a defensive blunder from a corner kick. The Burnley FC player reacted quickest, calmly slotting the ball home in the 100th minute to seal a historic qualification for the Central African side.
The tense playoff showdown, played at the Estadio Akron, confirmed DR Congo as the 47th nation to secure a spot in the global tournament — ending a half-century wait since their last appearance in 1974, when the country competed as Zaire.
The Congolese side now faces a daunting challenge after being placed in Group K alongside the Colombia national football team, Portugal national football team, and Uzbekistan national football team.
Team Captain, Chancel Mbemba, celebrated the milestone but quickly reminded his teammates that the real work is just beginning.
