Lukashenko and Kim Deepen Ties With Symbolic Gifts at Pyongyang Summit
Alexander Lukashenko made a striking gesture during his visit to Pyongyang, handing Kim Jong Un an automatic rifle as both leaders sealed a new friendship agreement. The moment, which included a light-hearted joke about “enemies,” drew laughter from Kim, who inspected the weapon before presenting Lukashenko with a decorative shell-crafted vase in return.
The meeting brought together two key allies of Vladimir Putin, both of whom remain under heavy international sanctions and have supported Moscow during the ongoing war in Ukraine.
North Korea has reportedly supplied Russia with large quantities of ammunition and even deployed troops to assist in military operations, while Belarus played a strategic role early in the conflict by allowing its territory to be used as a staging ground for the 2022 invasion. Minsk has also since agreed to host Russian tactical nuclear weapons along its borders with NATO-aligned countries.
For Lukashenko, the trip – his first to North Korea in more than three decades in power – signals a careful diplomatic balancing act. While strengthening alliances with nations opposed to the West, he has also made limited moves toward easing tensions with the United States, including recent talks with a U.S. envoy and the release of political detainees in exchange for softer sanctions.
Both sides described the talks as a step toward closer cooperation, with Belarusian officials saying ties were entering a “new stage,” while Kim emphasised shared positions against Western pressure.
Critics, however, see the meeting differently. Franak Viacorka, an aide to exiled opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, dismissed the summit as self-serving, arguing it offers little benefit to ordinary citizens and instead reflects growing military and political alignment between two heavily sanctioned governments.
