Panic broke out in Borno State on Monday after armed men suspected to be Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters attacked Government Day Secondary School, Lassa, in Askira/Uba Local Government Area. The attackers stormed the school while students were writing their National Examinations Council (NECO) exams and took some of them away.
The heavily armed assailants reportedly struck around 9:00 a.m., shooting into the air and sending students, teachers and residents running for safety.
Reports say one teacher died in the attack, while another was injured.
Confirming the incident, ASP Nahum Daso, spokesperson for the Borno State Police Command, said several students were still missing after the invasion.
ASP Daso said the attackers took “an unspecified number of students” and that “some are still missing.”
He noted that police could not immediately confirm reports of fatalities linked to the incident.
Daso added that security forces, including the military, Civilian Joint Task Force and the Area Commander in Askira/Uba, have started a combined rescue operation.
According to him, personnel are currently searching surrounding forest areas to rescue the abducted students and track down the attackers.
