The Nigerian presidency has debunked claims that the country’s recent migration agreement with the United Kingdom requires Nigeria to accept foreign nationals.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s state visit to the UK aims to strengthen partnership and facilitate safe migration flows between the two countries.
Key provisions of the MoU include:
- Repatriation: Only verified Nigerian nationals will be repatriated, with multiple levels of identification and verification.
- Dignified Return: Returnees will be treated with dignity and respect, with due regard to human rights and fundamental freedoms.
- Personal Belongings: Migrants will carry their legally acquired belongings to their destination country.
- Reintegration Assistance: Returnees will receive basic on-arrival and reintegration support, including airport reception, accommodation, and assistance with finding employment or starting a business.
The MoU is valid for an initial five-year period, renewable for another five years. The Nigerian government emphasises that media organisations should seek clarification to avoid spreading misinformation
