Nigeria Launches Digital Birth and Death Registration Platform
Nigeria’s new VitalReg platform allows citizens to register births and deaths online, apply for birth attestation, correct records and verify certificates.

ABUJA: The Federal Government has launched a nationwide digital platform designed to make birth and death registration easier and more accessible to Nigerians.
The platform, known as VitalReg, was introduced by the National Population Commission (NPC) under the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (E-CRVS) system. It allows Nigerians to access several civil registration services online, including birth and death registration, birth attestation, correction of records and certificate verification.
The digital system became fully operational nationwide from July 1, 2026, covering Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. The initiative is aimed at reducing paperwork and long queues while improving the security and accessibility of vital records.
According to information from the NPC, online birth registration is currently available for children born in Nigeria who have a National Identification Number (NIN). Applicants can create an account, provide the required information and follow the online application process.
For those registering deaths, applicants are required to provide relevant information about the deceased and the circumstances of the death. Nigerians who need assistance can also visit an NPC registration centre.
The NPC has stressed the importance of registering vital events, as accurate birth and death records help provide legal identity and support planning for healthcare, education, social services and other government programmes.
