Manchester City lifted the Carabao Cup once again after a solid 2-0 win over Arsenal at Wembley on Sunday, with an unexpected hero taking centre stage.
- Young defender Nico O’Reilly turned out to be the difference-maker, scoring both goals in the second half to hand City their ninth title in the competition and their first since 2021 under Pep Guardiola.
The game started with plenty of energy, and Arsenal were the first to threaten, forcing James Trafford into several early saves to keep things level.
City controlled most of the possession in the first half but couldn’t find a way through, while Mikel Arteta’s side looked dangerous on the break and from set-pieces, though they lacked the finishing touch.
The deadlock was finally broken just after the hour mark when a cross from Bernardo Silva slipped awkwardly through the hands of Kepa Arrizabalaga, leaving O’Reilly with a simple header to open the scoring.
Four minutes later, he struck again, this time finishing off a neat delivery from Matheus Nunes, to give City a comfortable lead.
Arsenal tried to fight back, with Riccardo Calafiori coming closest, but his effort hit the post as City stayed in control to see out the win.
The result marks a strong comeback for City after a short run of poor form, and further cements their dominance in domestic cup competitions under Guardiola, who now holds a record five Carabao Cup titles.
For Arsenal, it’s a tough blow in what has otherwise been a promising campaign. While they’re still in the mix in the league and other competitions, this defeat ends their hopes of winning four trophies this season.
Both sides have been impressive this year, but on the day, City’s composure and finishing made all the difference as they added yet another trophy to their collection.
