Nigerian Government Bans Yahoo, Gmail for Official Use, Rolls Out 115,000 GovMail Accounts
The Federal Government has put an end to the use of personal and generic emails like Yahoo Mail and Gmail for official public-sector business.
In a directive announced by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack, all civil servants are now required to migrate to a secure, institutional email platform for official communications.
Over 115,000 active “GovMail” accounts have been activated across Ministries, Departments and Agencies to make government communication traceable, professional, and secure.
According to the FG, the move is designed to protect institutional memory. Official records and correspondence will now remain within government systems even after officers exit their roles, closing a major gap in data security and accountability.
