Another Nigerian-born figure has risen to prominence in the United Kingdom as Councillor Rosaline Ogunro was officially inaugurated as the new Mayor of Islington in London.
Her emergence comes barely a year after Nigerian-born Jason Jackson became the Borough’s first Nigerian-born Mayor, further highlighting the growing influence of Nigerians in British politics and public service.
Ogunro, who has a background in community advocacy and broadcasting, assumes office at a period when local councils across the U.K. are facing increasing pressure over governance and public services.
She was first elected as Councillor for St. Peter’s and Canalside Ward in May 2022 and currently serves on the Homes and Communities Scrutiny Committee as well as the Licensing Committee. Before her inauguration, she also held the position of Deputy Mayor, according to Islington Labour.
Before venturing into politics, Ogunro worked with several voluntary organisations, including the Islington Citizens Advice Bureau, where she still works part-time as an adviser.
She also previously worked in the Marketing Department of the London Symphony Orchestra as Customer Service and Office Coordinator and sang in the orchestra’s Community Choir for more than two decades.
Ogunro also has experience in broadcasting and was appointed to the Board of Trustees of St. Luke’s Centre in May 2022. Her interests include singing, fashion design, clothes making and gardening.
Her inauguration adds to the growing recognition Nigerians continue to receive in the United Kingdom across politics, business, healthcare, academia and community development.
Earlier in January 2026, several Nigerians were recognised in King Charles III’s Honours List for their contributions in fields including medicine, education, entrepreneurship, philanthropy and civic leadership.
