ABUJA, Nigeria — First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has described Nigerian workers as the backbone of national progress in a tribute marking 2026 Workers’ Day.
In a statement released Thursday, May 1, Tinubu praised the resilience and dedication of the nation’s labor force. She said workers across all sectors drive development and sustain the economy.
Tinubu’s Workers’ Day Message
“On this special Workers’ Day, I salute the Nigerian worker. You are the backbone of our national progress,” the First Lady said.
She noted that teachers, doctors, farmers, artisans, and civil servants each play a vital role. “Your daily sacrifice builds the Nigeria we all desire,” Tinubu added.
The First Lady acknowledged current economic challenges but urged workers to remain steadfast. She said President Bola Tinubu’s administration remains committed to improving welfare and creating opportunities.
Recognition of Labour’s Role
Tinubu highlighted the contribution of labor unions in advancing workers’ rights. She commended their advocacy for fair wages, safe workplaces, and social protection.
“Your voices matter. Your strength powers our industries, schools, hospitals, and farms,” she said.
The First Lady also paid tribute to informal sector workers, including market traders and transport operators. She described them as “unsung heroes” who keep the economy moving.
Commitment to Welfare and Reforms
The statement referenced ongoing government efforts to address wage concerns and job creation. Tinubu said the Renewed Hope Agenda prioritizes policies that support decent work and economic inclusion.
She urged public and private employers to invest in training and workplace safety. “A motivated workforce is the foundation of sustainable growth,” the First Lady stated.
Tinubu called for unity and patriotism, asking workers to continue serving with integrity. “Together, we will build a stronger, more prosperous Nigeria,” she said.
National Reaction to May Day Tribute
The Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress welcomed the First Lady’s message. NLC President Joe Ajaero said recognition from the presidency boosts morale.
Workers across Abuja, Lagos, and Kano held rallies and parades to mark May Day. Many carried placards demanding better pay and improved working conditions.
The Federal Government declared May 1 a public holiday to honor workers nationwide.
