Reverend Father Gabriel Osu Dies At 72

The respected Catholic priest and longtime communications director of the Lagos Archdiocese passed away on May 8 after decades of service to the church.

The Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos has announced the death of Very Rev. Msgr. Gabriel Sunsay Osu, who passed away on Friday, May 8, 2026, at the age of 72.

The announcement was made in an official statement released by the Archbishop of Lagos, who described the late cleric’s passing as a painful loss to the Catholic community but urged the faithful to remain steadfast in faith and hope in the resurrection.

Monsignor Osu was born on September 5, 1954, in Ogbego Quarters, Ubulu-Uku, located in Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State.

He was ordained a Catholic priest on December 5, 1981, and dedicated over four decades to pastoral service, evangelism, and communication within the church.

Throughout his ministry, Msgr. Osu served in several notable parishes and institutions across Lagos, including Holy Cross Cathedral, St. Gregory College, St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, St. Paul Catholic Church, and Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church.

The late priest also served for many years as the Lagos Archdiocesan Director of Social Communications, where he played a key role in strengthening Catholic media and communication efforts within the archdiocese.

Until his death, he resided at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Lekki.

The Archdiocese stated that funeral arrangements would be announced later while calling on Christians and well-wishers to pray for the peaceful repose of his soul and comfort for those mourning his passing.

“May God grant him eternal rest and a place of happiness, light, and peace among the saints,” the statement read.
