President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on state governors to quickly put measures in place to ease the burden of rising prices, warning that the ongoing tensions in the Gulf region could make life even tougher for Nigerians.
He gave this charge on Sunday while hosting Vice President Kashim Shettima and members of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum at his Lagos residence during the Eid al-Fitr celebrations.
Tinubu explained that the growing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran is already affecting global energy markets, a situation he said could drive up fuel prices and worsen the cost of living.
He stressed the need to protect the most vulnerable, noting that inflation is likely to rise further and reduce people’s purchasing power.
The president also pointed out that as fuel and transportation costs increase, labour unions may begin to push harder for salary reviews and government support, urging governors to act before things escalate.
According to him, governments at all levels must work together and ensure that policies directly address the everyday struggles Nigerians are facing.
On security, Tinubu described insecurity as a major obstacle to growth and national development, adding that his administration is working with international partners to strengthen Nigeria’s defence capacity.
He revealed that talks during his recent trip to the United Kingdom focused on securing equipment and support for the country’s security agencies, alongside further discussions with Emmanuel Macron to deepen cooperation.
The president also praised Shettima for visiting Borno State after recent attacks in Maiduguri, assuring that new technologies would be introduced to better protect citizens.
Speaking on behalf of the governors, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who chairs the NGF, commended Tinubu’s leadership and said his recent international engagements have boosted Nigeria’s image globally.
He added that governors are still in talks over the creation of state police, with plans underway to present a formal proposal to the National Assembly.
The meeting brought together governors from across the country, highlighting growing concerns over both the economic situation and ongoing security challenges.
