ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Government has begun integrating Nigeria’s long-awaited National Digital Postcode System with the National Identification Number (NIN), marking a major step towards creating a unified digital identity and addressing system for every home and building across the country.
The initiative follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), a partnership designed to strengthen identity verification, improve address validation, and accelerate Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda.
Under the new system, every addressable building in Nigeria will receive a unique, GIS-enabled, machine-readable digital postcode. The postcode will be linked to an individual’s National Identification Number, allowing citizens to verify both their identity and location through a single trusted platform.
NIMC Director-General, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, said the integration will allow Nigerians to retrieve their digital postcode directly through the NIN platform.
According to her, while the NIN confirms who a person is, the National Digital Postcode confirms where that person can be reliably reached, creating a stronger foundation for governance, financial inclusion, healthcare, education, emergency response and digital service delivery.
The commission also disclosed that NIPOST has been licensed as a front-end NIN enrolment partner, enabling Nigerians to register for their NIN at post offices nationwide.
NIPOST Postmaster General, Tola Odeyemi, described the project as one of Nigeria’s most significant digital infrastructure initiatives, saying every standing structure in the country will receive its own unique digital location identifier.
She explained that the project, first conceived in 2006, has now secured full Federal Government backing and is expected to improve logistics, emergency response, national planning, e-commerce deliveries and public safety.
The Federal Government has announced that the first phase of the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System is scheduled to begin in October 2026, with nationwide expansion expected thereafter.

Once fully implemented, the digital postcode system is expected to:

- Link verified addresses to NIN records.

- Support better planning and digital governance across Nigeria.
The project represents one of the country’s biggest digital identity reforms in decades and is expected to modernise Nigeria’s outdated addressing system while supporting the Federal Government’s wider digital economy strategy.
