Ghana Throws Borders Open: Visa-Free Entry for All Africans From May 25th.
Ghana is set to open its doors wider to the rest of Africa with a sweeping new travel policy that will allow citizens from across the continent to enter the country without a visa. The initiative is scheduled to take effect on May 25, aligning with celebrations of Africa Day.
The announcement was made by President John Mahama during the recent state visit of Emmerson Mnangagwa to Ghana, according to the country’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa.
The policy expands on an earlier proposal by former President, Nana Akufo-Addo, who had suggested visa-free travel for all African passport holders in January 2025 during his final State of the Nation Address. Although the plan was initially expected to begin in 2025, it was not implemented before he left office.
With the new decision, Ghana joins a small but growing list of African countries already offering visa-free access to fellow Africans, including Benin, The Gambia, Rwanda, and Seychelles.
Under the policy, travellers will no longer need to apply for visas before arriving in Ghana. Officials say the move is part of a broader overhaul of the country’s immigration system aimed at making travel easier while maintaining proper border controls.
As part of the reforms, the government also plans to launch a new digital visa platform next month. The system will allow visitors who still require documentation for other purposes to complete the process online, making entry into the country faster and more efficient.
Minister Ablakwa said the initiative is designed to strengthen Ghana’s reputation as a hub for Pan-African cooperation, while also boosting tourism, business travel, and trade within the continent. The visa-free arrangement will also integrate with the upcoming e-visa framework the government plans to introduce.
Beyond welcoming visitors, Ghana has also been negotiating travel deals for its own citizens. The Foreign Ministry says the country has secured 23 visa-waiver agreements for Ghanaian passport holders since last year.
The policy aligns with wider continental efforts to make travel easier for Africans, including economic integration initiatives such as the African Continental Free Trade Area.
Meanwhile, regional development efforts are also gaining momentum. The ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development recently approved $266.7 million and an additional XOF30 billion for major infrastructure projects across Nigeria, The Gambia, Ghana, Senegal, and Côte d’Ivoire, reinforcing efforts to drive sustainable development and regional integration.
