World Photography Day: Celebrating the Power of the Lens in Nigeria and Around the World

From Nigeria to the world, photographers use their lenses to capture history, preserve memories and tell powerful stories that transcend borders.

August 19 is World Photography Day, a global celebration of photography and the millions of photographers whose images help us see, remember and understand the world differently.

From the busy streets of Lagos to the communities of Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano, Benin City and beyond, Nigerian photographers continue to document the people, culture, celebrations, struggles and defining moments that shape the nation.

Photography in Nigeria has grown far beyond traditional studio portraits and newspaper assignments. Today, photographers work across journalism, entertainment, fashion, weddings, advertising, documentaries, social media and digital storytelling. Their cameras capture everything from historic political events and cultural festivals to celebrity moments and everyday life.

For photojournalists in particular, the camera is more than a piece of equipment. It is a tool for documenting history. A single photograph can preserve a moment that words may struggle to describe, expose an issue that needs attention, celebrate an achievement or tell the story of people whose voices may otherwise go unheard.

Around the world, photography has played a powerful role in recording major events and shaping public memory. Photographs have taken us into war zones, presidential palaces, Olympic arenas, refugee camps, fashion runways, remote communities and family homes. They have shown humanity at its best and, sometimes, at its most difficult moments.

The rise of smartphones and social media has also transformed photography. Almost everyone now has a camera in their pocket, allowing moments to be captured and shared instantly with audiences around the world. Yet professional photography remains an art and a craft that requires vision, patience, technical skill, timing and the ability to tell a compelling story through one frame.

As Nigeria and the world celebrate World Photography Day, it is also a moment to recognise the photographers behind the images.

They are the ones standing in the rain, waiting for the perfect moment. They are working long hours at events, on streets, in studios and sometimes in challenging environments. They are preserving memories, documenting history and creating visual records that future generations may one day depend on.

Today, we celebrate every photographer, from the professional photojournalist with years of experience to the young creative discovering photography with a mobile phone.

Every photograph tells a story. Every photographer preserves a moment. And every moment captured today becomes part of tomorrow’s history.

Happy World Photography Day to photographers in Nigeria and around the world. 📸🌍
