Minister Suggests Some Students May Be Receiving NELFUND Support Without Parents’ Knowledge

Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele says some students may have received NELFUND funds without informing their parents, urging families to verify their children’s applications and payments.

ABUJA, Nigeria: The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, has suggested that some Nigerian students may be receiving financial support from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) without informing their parents.

Oyedele remarked during a media briefing in Abuja on Wednesday while responding to an audience member who claimed that his three children in school had not benefited from NELFUND and that they did not know anyone who had received the financial assistance.

The minister advised the parent to speak with his children and confirm whether they had applied for the scheme.

Oyedele also suggested that the parent request evidence of any applications submitted by the students, noting that some students may have received NELFUND support without their parents being aware.

“They may have received the money, and they are receiving support from you,” the minister said.

His comments have sparked discussions about the awareness of and access to the federal government’s student loan programme, particularly among parents who may not know whether their children have applied for or received assistance.

NELFUND was established to provide financial support to eligible Nigerian students and help reduce the financial burden associated with tertiary education.

The minister’s comments have also prompted questions about how students and their families are informed about disbursements under the scheme.
